Introduction to Changchun University of Chinese Medicine
The University, founded in 1950 as Changchun Municipal School of Traditional Chinese Medicine, and grew out of Changchun College of Traditional Chinese Medicine, was renamed as Changchun University of Chinese Medicine (referred as to CCUCM). CCUCM is one of the provincial key universities of Jilin Province, University of the National Basic Ability Construction Project of Western and Central China and one of the Characteristic High-level Universities of Jilin Province. It is co-built by the People's Government of Jilin Province and the National Administration of Traditional Chinese Medicine.
CCUCM has always been adhering to the school motto of “Inheriting Ancient TCM Essence and Adopting Modern Medical Science, Enriching Morality and Perfecting Skills”, and focusing on the fundamental task of cultivating talents through virtue. The University has formed a multi-level and multi-type personnel training pattern from undergraduate education to master's and doctor's education, as well as higher vocational education, continuing education and international education. CCUCM has trained more than 50,000 talents of all levels and types for the country, and its alumni are all over the world. The University highlights the characteristics and advantages of Traditional Chinese medicine and combines production, education and research to continuously increase its contribution to regional economic and social development.
The University has a total enrollment of 14,515 full-time students, including 11,282 undergraduates and 3,166 postgraduates. There are 155 doctoral supervisors and 730 master supervisors. The University has 1 double hired Academician, 4 TCM Masters and 1 Bethune Medalist, 1 Chang Jiang Scholar, 1 Chief Scientist of National 973 Project, 4 National Leading TCM Figures – the QiHuang Scholars, 1 recipient of the New Century Talents Project, 4 National Excellent Teachers, 4 National Famous TCM Doctors, 2 National Famous TCM Teachers, 1 National Famous Teacher for Ideological And Political Education,40 recipients of the State Council Special Allowance, 2 recipients of the New Century Excellent Talents Program of the Ministry of Education, and 27 instructors for the inheritance of academic experience of TCM.
The University focuses on Traditional Chinese Medicine, with coordinated development of its five discipline categories — medicine, engineering, management, law and liberal arts. There are 2 first-level postdoctoral stations, 2 first-level doctoral programs, 25 second-level doctoral programs, 1 professional doctoral program, 6 first-level master's programs, 41 second-level master's programs, and 5 professional master's programs. There are 19 key disciplines of National Administration of Traditional Chinese Medicine, 4 Characteristic High-level Disciplines of Jilin Province, and 1 Discipline established under the “World First Class Discipline Cultivation Plan” of Jilin Province. The University has 23 undergraduate programs, including 7 state-level first-class programs, 4 state-level characteristic programs, 1 state-level comprehensive reform pilot program. CCUCM has 1 national talent training model innovation experimental area, 1 National Virtual Instructional Research Pilot Section, and 1 Sub-section. It has 5 state-level first-class undergraduate courses, 1 demonstration course for Ideological And Political Education, 2 state-level excellent MOOCs, 3 state-level excellent courses, 2 state-level virtual simulation experimental teaching projects, and 1 teaching group for Ideological And Political Education. The University has edited 67 planned textbooks, and has achieved 1 Advanced Individual Prize, 2 Second Prize Textbooks in the First National Textbook Construction Award. CCUCM has won 2 State-Level Teaching Achievement Awards, 1 Special Prize of Jilin Provincial Teaching Achievement Award
CCUCM has strong scientific research strength, since the 13th Five-Year Plan, it has undertaken 62 major key science and technology projects, including the National Key Research and Development Program, the “973” project, the Fourth Traditional Chinese Medicine Resources Survey Project, the Regional Innovation and Development Joint Fund project of the National Natural Science Foundation of China, and the National Social Science Fund of China. It has achieved 512 high-level scientific research achievements, and 131 scientific research achievements at all levels, including 6 First prizes of Provincial Progress Award in Scientific, and 1 First Prize of Provincial Excellent Social Science Achievement. There are 155 TCM-oriented scientific research platforms at all levels, 82 of which are national and provincial scientific research platforms, including Institute of Ginseng Scientific Research of Jilin Province, Changchun National Biological Industry Base Pharmaceutical Pilot Test Platform, National TCM Quality Testing Technology Platform (North China), and National Base for International Scientific and Technological Cooperation in Modern Chinese Medicine. CCUCM has won 146 awards for innovation and entrepreneurship above the provincial level, including 35 state-level awards. CCUCM was honored as the top 50 Universities with Typical Experience on Innovation and Entrepreneurship in 2019 by the Ministry of Education. In 2020, the Metabolic Disease Team of CCUCM was selected as one of the first five Multi-Disciplinary Cross-Innovation Teams of TCM in China.
CCUCM is one of the first universities approved by the Ministry of Education to receive and cultivate international students, students from Taiwan, Hong Kong and Macao, and Chinese Government Scholarship students. It has carried out extensive academic exchanges and cooperation with universities and research institutes from 21 countries and regions.
The construction and development of CCUCM has been recognized by all walks of life and governments at all levels. The University is the National Cultural Quality Education Base for College Students, the National TCM Cultural Publicity and Education Base, and the National Popular Science Education Base. The University has won the titles of “National Civilized Unit” and “National Civilized Campus”, and has been honored as one of the Universities with Typical Employment Experience for Graduates and National Innovation and Entrepreneurship Typical Experience Universities by the Ministry of Education. The School of Basic Medicine has won the title of “Advanced Collective of National Education System”. The Affiliated Hospital has been awarded the “National May Day Labor Certificate”, “National Advanced Collective of Health System” and “National Advanced Collective of Foreign Medical Aid”.
The University has taken the initiative in COVID-19 prevention and control by leveraging its advantages as a medical university. 47 medical staffs have been dispatched to form two TCM medical teams to assist Wuhan in the fight against the COVID-19 epidemic. In Leishenshan Hospital, they achieved the proud achievement of zero deaths, zero infections, zero accidents, zero complaints and zero recurrence. 75 medical staffs were selected to fight against the epidemics broke out in Jilin, Shulan, Changchun and Nong ’an, which demonstrated the original aspiration and mission of Boundless Love and Absolute Sincerity of TCM practitioners in the new era. The affiliated hospital of the University was awarded the titles of “National Advanced Collective against COVID-19” and “National Advanced Primary Party Organization”.
In the new era, facing the new opportunities and new challenges, CCUCM will thoroughly implement Xi Jinping’s Thought on Socialism with Chinese Characteristics for a New Era and the Spirit of the 19th National Congress of the Communist Party of China, build on past achievements and strive for the new progress, and forge towards the goal of being a first-class TCM university.
